RESEARCH It has been more than 100 years since the first written description of ALS by English scientist Augustus Waller. The first published writing about this disease (also sometimes called Charcot's Disease) was in 1869 by Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot, a French neurologist. Since then there have been many theories voiced regarding the cause of ALS, however very few have had scientific study. The current belief is that ALS may be a disease of several causes. Research into the causes of ALS have included environmental, inherited , immune system failure, neurofilaments. The Toronto Sunnybrook Hospital ALS / Neuromuscular Clinic Research team needs financial support to increase the awareness of this disease and provide education and support to the individuals and their families who are stricken with the disease. As well, this superb community of medical professionals needs financial support in their research efforts to find a cure or at the very least to improve and extend lives of those afflicted with ALS. The goals of the Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation - ALS / Neuromuscular Clinic are:
Due to the fact that this disease is so rapid in its devastation and finality, the patient community is relatively small. Despite the horrific personal toll that this disease takes on the individual and his or her family, the impact on the community at large does not seem to warrant extensive research funding. Finding a cause and a cure for ALS will require a more personal commitment by the public.
